We firmly believe that the foundations of exploration and adventure are built on team work.

Each member of our team brings unique strengths and skills forged through adversity

Together we all contribute to the success of every expedition.

The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team.

Dr Gareth Andrews and Dr Richard Stephenson have been exploring the polar regions together for over 10 years and have developed into a close-knit unit and world-class expedition team. The two doctors, when they are free from their medical commitments, specialise in long distance endurance polar expeditions.

Together they have completed expeditions to the North Pole, Greenland and a world-first traverse of Iceland.

Dr Gareth Andrews
Specialist Anaesthetist, Expedition Doctor

Gareth has been a member of three polar expeditions and has travelled over 1500kms on foot through the polar regions. In 2013, with Richard, he trekked 600km from Resolute Bay in the Canadian Arctic across the sea ice to the Magnetic North Pole. The month long expedition saw them battle extreme cold, polar storms, leads of open ocean and the constant threat from polar bears. As Expedition Doctor in 2016 he completed an unsupported crossing of the Greenland Ice Sheet travelling 550km in 26 days. In 2019 Gareth and Richard completed the first unsupported traverse of Iceland via the Vatnajokull Glacier and the first descent of the Skjalfandafljot river from the source to the sea.

Gareth is back in Sydney with his young family after spending the last 12 months on the Covid frontline in Wales. He is a Consultant Anaesthetist at St Vincent’s Hosptial and the new Northern Beaches Hospital and is back on the Covid frontline.

Dr Richard Stephenson
Specialist Emergency Physician, Expedition Doctor

Richard has been exploring the polar regions for over twenty years. He joined his first expedition to the Arctic as a teenager to climb the unknown glaciers and mountains of Eastern Greenland. As an explorer and mountaineer he has climbed around the world, notably in the Altai Shan of Mongolia, the Western Himalaya and the European Alps. He joined Gareth in 2013 in their gruelling Arctic Ocean expedition to reach the Magnetic North Pole. Together in 2019 they completed a world-first unsupported traverse of Iceland.

Richard lives in Dunedin on the South Island of New Zealand with his young family. As a Specialist Emergency Physician, he continues to play an integral role in Dunedin Hospital’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Managment TEAM

We pride ourselves in our team being our family, many of whom have been with us since day one. Some having sponsored our first expeditions and others having listened to our countless discussions around routes, planning and logistics with much enthusiasm only for us to find them never leaving our office and slowly becoming “part of the furniture” so to speak. Regardless of how we all came together, we are grateful for the value we all add and the work we all do to make every expedition a success.

Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.

As Ernest Shackleton put it “Men are not made from easy victories, but based on great defeats”, it is for this very reason that we seek mentors and advisors for all that we do. Our advisors and mentors not only add value to our team through their wisdom and experience, they also form a vital part of the team itself. We believe that through learning from and sharing in the knowledge of their successes and failures we are able to achieve our shared vision of completing our expedition goals.

Since the Pharaohs artists, writers, poets, researchers and explorers have required  patron great and small. As can been seen by the support of Henry The Navigator during the Portuguese age of Discovery and by the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914-1917 managed by Shackleton and funded by anyone willing to support his cause.

In our case our Patrons are not our financial benefactors, but instead great friends and admirers of our expeditions.
